Hello everyone and welcome to Mrs.Mooney's Junior Infant blog page.
We have all settled in really well over the last few weeks and we are getting really stuck in to our work. We have made new friends and are learning something new each day.
Watch this space to check out what we have been up to!
P.E. will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays so please ensure your child is wearing their tracksuit and trainers on these days.

Easter baking!
We made some chocolate nests for our Easter bake sale. We had so much fun melting the chocolate, mixing the chocolate with the shredded wheat, scooping the mixture into bun cases and then adding Smarties for eggs.
Transport
Our most recent theme in the classroom has been Transport. We looked at the different modes of transport and discussed which modes are best for different journeys. We loved our Aistear stations, particularly role play area with the airport and train station. Check out the other activities we got up to!
Spring is in the air!
We enjoyed our theme of Spring / The Farm this term and getting to learn about the changes that happen. The children became familiar with the names of the mother and baby animals and about what happens on the farm. We got to work in a veterinary clinic helping sick animals, wash farm animals in soapy water, play with the farm in small world, and create our own farms and farm animals.

Our visit to the library!
Today, for World Book Day, we got to visit the local library. We were so excited to get on the bus!!! When we got there, we sang a few songs and listened to some fun stories. We got to explore the children's area of the library and look at some books. We had such a fun time!!
Doctor! Doctor!
This month the children have loved our Doctor / Hospital theme. They enjoyed the hospital role play area and pretending to be doctors, nurses, patients and even the receptionist. They also had fun completing other activities such as making hospital equipment out of play dough, creating medicine from coloured water, making their own X-ray / skeleton, playing different hospital themed games, making a hospital with the small world characters, making their own medical bags and creating things from junk art materials such as ambulances and hospitals.
The Restaurant
In January, our theme was 'The Restaurant / Food'. We had so much fun at our different Aistear stations based on this theme. We had a ball in the role play area where we played the roles of the waiters/waitresses, chefs/cooks and customers. We loved greeting the customers, taking their orders, cooking their meals and of course charging them at the end! We created our own small world restaurant, completed printing with different fruits and vegetables, we created different types of food with our play dough and played different puzzles based on food.
Maths in Junior Infants
We have been very busy with different strands in Maths this term.
The children have been copying and continuing given patterns and then going off to make patterns of their own. We can make simple patterns and some of us have tried making more complex patterns.
We have explored the topic 'Weight' and measured different items in our classroom to see which are heavy and those that are light. We have been using language of comparison and using balance scales to see which objects are heavier/lighter than.
We have been focusing on numbers and combining small numbers of objects up to the value of 3.

December Aistear: Christmas and Santa's workshop
We had great fun with our December Aistear based on the theme of Christmas and Santa's workshop. We had a lot of busy, busy elves checking out the naughty and nice lists, making toys and wrapping presents. We got creative and made our own wrapping paper using paint and stencils. At our art table, we designed our own Christmas trees and created a scene of Santa getting stuck in the chimney. We also assembled the nativity scene and played some Christmas board games.
The Three Little Pigs
The children enjoyed our Aistear activities inspired by the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. Over the last few weeks they have enjoyed role playing the characters of the 3 little pigs and the big bad wolf. They tried constructing buildings that the wolf would not be able to blow down and they tested the buildings out themselves. They also enjoyed retelling the story of the 3 Little Pigs in the Small World station and some children created their own version. We also had fun at the art station recreating the 3 houses and some of us created 'Wanted' posters to help us catch the big bad wolf.
Length
We have been learning about Length and exploring how objects can be long or short. Firstly, we tried finding 2 objects in our room - one that is short and one that is long. We compared these and talked about 'longer than' and 'shorter than'. Later, we made our own snakes and at our tables, we ordered them from shortest to longest. We repeated this activity again but we used cubes to make lines. We also discussed how some objects can be the same length.
November Aistear: Construction Site
So far this month, we have been exploring the construction/building site. We have looked at the different people who work on a construction site such as the foreman, architect and builders as well as looking at the different tools, machinery and vehicles. We have had fun at our different stations, including role play at the building site, sand tray playing with the vehicles, small world on the construction mat, constructing our own buildings from junk art materials and wooden blocks and acting as architects to draw plans. We have been super busy!!
Halloween Dress Up day!!!
Today was dress up day at school. I had trouble recognising the boys and girls this morning when they came into the classroom!! They all looked fabulous! A great effort was made by everyone.

Maths week
We have been continuing to explore Maths all around us this week. We went out to the yard and followed a Maths trail to create different things to do with Maths. We also got creative and made our very own shape monsters from different 2D shapes.
Maths, Maths, everywhere!!
This week is Maths week. This morning we went on a Maths hunt around school to see if we could find anything to do with Maths. There were so many things to see! We saw lots of different shapes, numbers, things that were different sizes and heights and we even saw some patterns. Check out our photographs and guess what Maths is in each picture.
October: All about Autumn
We have loved our Autumn Aistear stations this month! We have been busy making homes for our hibernating animals, making artwork from leaf printing, finding Autumn items in the sand tray and playing with the hibernating animals in the small world area. All the children have been exploring outdoors and collecting lots of Autumn items. Check out our lovely prayer space where we placed some of the Autumn things the children found. Aren't the different colours amazing?
Aistear: Me, My Family and My Home
For the month of September, our Aistear theme has been 'Me, My Family and My Home'. We have been enjoying our different stations and learning more about ourselves, our families and the places we live. Some of our stations include Play Dough, Construction, Role Play and Small World.
Table top Activities
Every morning when we come into school, we work busily at our table top activities. These help with a range of skills such as fine motor, sharing, turning taking and co ordination.
